COVID - 19

Dear CUPE 2745 Members,

As your inner executive, we are writing to inform you of the latest happenings with regards to COVID-19 and as we are all aware this is a very serious situation that we are all faced with at this time and as your leaders we will do the best to provide information as quickly as possible. The Province of New Brunswick  has spoken to your president and CUPE NB executive members to ask their input on the possibility of working across other sectors within the province, (Part I,II, III, IV) in the case of a crisis due to COVID-19.

What that may mean to you the member is this, you may be asked to work in another sector of government if there were to be a shortage due to a possible outbreak of COVID-19 in another particular sector. As your leadership we are committed to have as many answers as possible to your questions before this happens. There are several concerns for us, the number once concern is your health and safety. We also have concerns about the proper training that may be required for the position you would be entering, will this be in my own classification or could it be something else, will the pay rates be reflective of the work I am required to do or do I maintain the current rate I have, will my hours of work remain the same or do I expect to see a change, etc.... This is only a sample size of concerns we have, and we will communicate those and all others to the province as quickly as possible for answers.

Again, we would like to reassure you that your inner executive and leadership will do our best to have a clear picture as to what the expectation will be if you were required to do work of another sector within government.

If you require additional information, please feel free to contact your local executive, (Regional Vice Presidents), Provincial Inner or message us on our 2745 page or Facebook page.

Please know we will answer your questions as quickly as we have the answers as this is an ever-changing situation.

In Solidarity,
 CUPE 2745 Inner Executive

Please see the following statement on behalf of Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development Dominic Cardy:
“Last week, school districts circulated a memo requesting employees be advised to cover the ‘fist logo’ portion of any CUPE promotional materials in school environments. This was due to concerns that the symbol may be perceived as promoting violence or harassment, particularly to younger students, if taken out of context.
Having heard CUPE’s concerns on the matter, the department has determined we will allow CUPE members to display this logo within the school environment.
We are committed to preparing our students to be active and engaged citizens, which means having open discussions about ideas and freedom of expression.
I have spoken with CUPE 2745 representatives and have encouraged them to engage in a process of informing New Brunswickers on the history and meaning of the symbol in their logo, which has caused confusion and concern in the province. Next week, I will have discussions with the school districts on how we can permit members of CUPE to use the logo in an educational context and a learning opportunity for students.”aph.
